Evaluation
Before
I had a massive amount of fun and creative freedom when it came to this unit. It was very enjoyable and I loved every aspect of it from the drawing for the portfolio to the researching of other games concept art.
The weaknesses I have discovered from this unit are kind of the same from unit 78, I was quite bad at managing my time although I have improved quite heavily in this aspect. I didn't concentrate too much on one area of work or tasks but I did put more effort into other units by other teachers due to the amount of work involved in them instead of finding a balance between both of the units once again. In the future I will try my hardest to manage my time more efficiently and to find a balancing point between different units. I could also try and work on my drawing skills.
The strengths that I have found about myself are that I can draw if I put effort and concentration into my drawings. I use to believe I was a bad drawer but looking back over this unit I can see that I am not as bad as I thought although there is much room for improvement if I continue to push myself. My researching skills have improved quite a bit from this unit as well as finding the first stage of concept art for games was quite hard and tedious but it showed that I need to commit and put a huge amount of effort if I wish to find less obvious results.
As a whole I have really enjoyed this unit due to drawing being a hobby that I have recently started to get into. There were a few parts which I didn't like such as the crating task but this was due to the fact that I am not very good with dimensions in drawing, especially when it comes to curving objects and placing them into 3D. However, getting to create my own character and drawing sketches were really fun tasks and as a whole I enjoyed a bunch of things. I will continue to look back on this unit and try to improve the skills that I have learned to better myself and create challenges for myself. I also wish that I could have added so much more to my task 3 poster drawing but because of my limitations in art I had to hold back, I also wish I could draw humans a little better because some features of the main character haven't gone as planned such as the arms. However, I have drawn it good enough for you to gather the essential premise of the game without giving too much away.
After
Once my tasks had been completed my teacher gave me feedback on how I could make my drawings better for task 3 which would allow for me to gain a better grade. He told me to draw the three separate pictures so that people who look at my work could understand what was going on instead of having it all placed into one picture. So I went back and drew three different images one of the detective, environment and the detective's items. I am much more proud of my work as I didn't concentrate on cramming too much into one image, instead I just concentrated on the singular areas which allowed for work to be done easier and of higher quality.
Thanks to the feedback, I have proven to myself that I can produce much better art work if I take things more slowly and put a little more thought into how it can be done, I used techniques that I had learned from the classroom (such as the two point perspective method) and created work that exceeded the expectation I originally had. If I continue to use these techniques that I learned and gather feedback in the future then I should be able to improve my skills and create outstanding work.
