Set in a 1940s era
American hospital. US soldiers returning from Japan have brought back a
mysterious, but deadly virus which has pushed the health system to breaking
point. An investigation ensues.

Character 03 – Mitchell ‘Mitch’ Deforest
|
He is a typical
chain-smoking private investigator working in Los Angeles until the disease
hits. Mitch has a rather scruffy and unhealthy appearance. Aloof and laconic,
medium-build and height, dark hair, blue eyes, suit-wearing with five o’clock
shadow.

For this task I will research into multiple areas of media like film, games and TV and also using real life to help create a visual representation of how my game will look and to help me create multiple ideas for my drawings. Research is a huge importance when it comes to creating ideas as looking into multiple creations of the same genre because it can help you to come up with an idea that can suit your needs, it opens your mind to a wider variety of ways to create environments, characters and objects. Below I will be researching into multiple areas of media and real life to give a visual representation of how my drawings will look and to help me create the ideas to the best ability that they can be.
For my game I need to have a detective theme to it however, I also wish to add a horror theme to it making the game darker, gritty, bloody and everything that revolves around the horror genre whilst also sticking to the detective style.
The evil within
The evil within is a good representation of how I want my game to look, its main character is a detective and the overall genre is horror, looking at the first level and areas of the game I can gather ideas for my drawings.
Above is a good picture for what the character will wear, it gives me a good idea of how the main character will dress and how a detective stands. He gives a prominent look and is quite stern and serious. Another positive of this picture is if I wish to include any background characters or NPCs then I can look at his partner in the background.
This is another picture of the protagonist adding a horror element with the main evil force standing behind him.
This is am environmental picture, it helps me to visualise an isolated environment, it also helps to visualise how a hallway will look both isolated and with objects.
This is another environmental picture that gives a dark, gritty tone. This helps me to create ideas involving horror and mystery by creating objects covered in blood placed in an isolated and gloomy corridor.
This is another hallway which shows me how it would look with the protagonist standing there and with dead bodies scattered around.
This is another picture of the main protagonist helping to give me a new facial feature and emotion that I could use.
This is another picture of the main character being chased by one of the enemies in the game, this helps to give another emotion and visualising fear into my drawings.
LA noire
Is another great game to influence my drawings as the whole game is centred around detectives during the year 1947. The environment, clothes, weapons, objects and everything about the game can help influence me to create drawings for my detective video game.
In the above picture I can draw inspiration from the main character including his clothes, the weapon in his hand, the stance he is in and the background images of cops and more.
The above picture gives me more inspiration on how to make my character look giving me a vision of his facial features along with an enhanced vision of his clothes. Another idea I can draw from this is a logo that I could create to symbolise the detective service my character could work for. I can also gather some environmental ideas.
From this picture I can gather multiple ideas including how cars should, how the world that the drawings could be based in could look. I can also draw inspiration from the civilian and more that can be seen in the picture.
This picture gives me an experience under a different element that I can draw inspiration from and that is about how it depicts the world looking at night. From examining it there seems to be a lot more people walking along the sidewalk and neon signs are being used to advertise places off, I could possibly add this into my drawings.
This picture allows for me to get a look at multiple aspects and influences me further. I get a look into two weapons, one being a revolver and the other being a shotgun. The picture looks as though there is an investigation happening and gives me ideas of what the detectives office would look like along with pictures of different locations and a notebook that I could implement onto my character.
Murdered soul suspect
Murdered soul suspect is a game set in modern times but with a detective as the protagonist. It also has this dark and gritty theme to it that could fit into my game along with some environmental ideas.
The above picture shows the main character and is a promotional piece of art, I can gather ideas for clothes from his suit and the tone of the environment. The background characters can also give me ideas such as placing cops and cop cars to put my point across of danger.
This is another picture like the first one but from in the game instead of being promotional art, I can see the main character from the front this time getting ideas to give my character tattoos. I can also get ideas about using crime scenes and placing sticky tape in certain parts of my drawings.
This can give me ideas about the environment that the detective could be placed in, this gives significance of a police station or a place that a detective would go to study his cases.
Movies
LA confidential
LA confidential is another great influence but in the form a movie, this film is about a detective who wishes to live up to his fathers standards. It follows his story along with multiple other detectives who solve cases and crimes. This can help give me influence due to the fact that the film is centred around detectives.
The above picture shows off four of the main characters in the film. The way they stand, their facial features, their clothes and styles overall can help give me ideas for my character and help me to convey emotion with his facial features and looks.
The above picture can help give me influence about a weapon and how it is placed inside of its holster. The badge can again give me another idea of who the protagonist will work for in the game and the bullets and newspaper can help give me ideas to show my story in the drawings.
This picture can help give me a new perspective of the world at night, especially next to a crime scene. It can help set up a mood or convey a dark scene that I could draw.
Chinatown
Chinatown is a film that follows a single private detective in the case to surveil a clients husband. As the plot progresses he is framed or suspected as part of a crime revolving around the male and he must prove his innocence. This film can help give me ideas as it revolves around a private investigator and a his story.
In this picture I can get inspiration about the guys clothes, the cigarette in his mouth, the way that he stares at the woman and more. I can also get small influence from the perspective of being inside of a car from that time.
This picture is a drawing about chinatown and again gives me more inspiration about the main character's clothes. I can also gather another posture using the cigarette as another way to portray my character. The dark background and singular hand and gun can also give me inspiration to bring mystery into my drawings.
This is another shot of the main protagonist giving me the same ideas for clothes but in a different lighting. The background can give me ideas about the setting being in a remote area where very few people go giving it a more intense feel.
Other types of inspiration
I can also gather information from random research such as real life photos or movies, games and drawing that I have stumbled across whilst looking into influences about the 1940's.
The above picture is taken inside of a hospital from the 1940's. It can give me ideas for the interior design of a hospital setting and give me ideas about the types of objects like beds or people that you would see inside of a hospital setting.
Above is the exterior design of a hospital from the 1940's. I can gather ideas about how to make a hospital building look from the outside and whereabouts I would situate said hospital.
Above is an ambulance design from the 1940's. This gives me ideas for environmental objects to place into my drawings and also gives me an idea on what I could have the player drawn inside of.
The above picture is a real life picture of someone dressing up as though he is from the 1940's. His dress sense, position, lighting, objects and more can all give me inspiration towards how I should draw my character.

The above setting shows a detectives office, I can gather inspiration about the area that the detective could work in giving me many ideas for objects that could be added into my drawings. I can also convey emotions about the detective himself by experimenting around with multiple ways the office could look.
